Where
are the updates?
21Apr02
Starting on Saturday, April 6th we replaced the operating system on our main web server. It was Windows NT 4.0 Server. It is now running Windows 2000 Server. Between that and having Mail Problems with our Mail Server (an open relay), I just had enough time to get the website back up and running.
The following week I attempted to get in and update the website, only to have problems with the infamous Frontpage Extensions on the server. I tried many different things to get it to the point of accepting connections. It was really stuborn. The error always came back (with Frontpage) and said "Server Extensions have not been installed". In the IIS properties for the website, it stated the Extensions were installed, but needed updating. You go into "All Tasks" and then Select "Upgrade Extensions". No error would appear, but the process didn't resolve. I was stuck on this for some time.
On Sunday, Apr 13th I got a new computer. Ended up purchasing it from Costco. It's an HP Pavilion 760c. 1.9GHZ with 512mb ram and 120GB hd and 19" monitor. First time I had ever purchased a 'canned' system. But the price was right. My second option would have been a Dell system via Mail Order. Dell offered almost the same deal on a 1.8GHZ system and 60GB hard drive. Shipping and Handling would have been almost as much as Washington State tax.
Then this Friday (19th) I got my cable Internet installed. That meant time had to be spent on that to configure my home network for the new connection. If you didn't know, I had a dedicated dialup for the longest time. I am running a computer with Linux that dials up TSCNet and connects me with my true subnet. That connection is almost always active.
I attempted to find a way using Windows XP to run BOTH networks. I'm sure there is a way. My home server is still running Windows NT, and it works fine with both networks AND only one NIC. Windows XP Pro is a pain to attempt personal settings on Network configurations. XP Home is even WORSE.
So finally today (Sunday, April 21) I decided to create a new website at a different drive location (on the web server). That worked. I copied all my web files into it and it's now working. I didn't find a solution with the Frontpage Extensions problem, but I got around it.
Don't know how much longer I will keep the dedicated dialup operational. It's so slow compared to cable Internet. But cable was not my first choice. DSL was, but it's not available in my area just yet. Maybe when my one year obligation with AT&T Broadband is up, DSL will become available. I'm hoping.
In the meantime, I may just put my Linux box in use for my gateway to cable Internet. But I promise that is secondary to the website. It may take a couple of weeks, but I have almost 130 photos to update. They have been sitting here waiting to be seen.
