Explaining the transaction changes for this year:

1.    Free agent players are ALWAYS on waivers

This setting was required to fully implement change 2.

2.    ALL add/drops are via the waiver process

This means that in addition to the players that are dropped from a team, even the free agents (see change 1. above) can not be added except by the waiver process.  The reason for this change is to eliminate any advantage for those able to monitor breaking news during the day and make a quick add to their team.  Example….10 AM Wednesday story - ”McNabb out for season - arrested for running a meth lab - Vick to step in.”   Since Vick is a free agent, he would not be available until that same night via the waiver process at 11 PM.   Players dropped from a team will remain on waivers for 2 days before they are eligible to be picked up (this is not a change).  Note that players dropped on Fri or Sat may not be picked up until the following Tues.

3.    Waivers run Tues–Sat at 11:00 PM PST

Previous years we only ran waivers on Tues and Wed.  This change allows the maximum number of days/week to alter your team via change 2.

Note:  The potential problem with these changes is that after the last waiver process runs Saturday evening (11PM PST), you may not add any more players to your team (except by a trade that was approved earlier in the week).  This will require owners to become very familiar with the waiver process and to “stack” your waiver options as necessary to ensure you fill a position that may be off due to a bye week.  Example, if you are 5th in the waiver selection order and you need a DST, you should have 5 DST waiver requests lined up in case the 4 owners ahead of you take the DSTs you wanted (unlikely but you get the idea).  Recommendation: don’t wait until Saturday night to fill your bye week DST.   If for some reason you did not pick up a bye week DST by the last waiver run, your current DST would just get zero points.  The rest of your team will get points as usual and it is not considered an illegal lineup.

4.    Waiver order DOES NOT reset each week to the reverse order of standings

This is just something different to make teams think twice about their add/drop decisions, especially if you have the worst record.  Previous years, if you had the worst record, you would automatically have 1st waiver pick on Tues…..not anymore.  Whenever you pick up a player, you go to the bottom of the list until there is another waiver pick and then they go to the bottom of the list, and so on, and it never resets.  There is no limit to the number of waivers you can process each day.

Note: Turns out that the initial waiver order is the reverse of the draft order….must be an NFL.com default setting.

5.    Trade deadline is Wednesday prior to week 12 (before 1st round of Divisional games).
